Avoid Common Myths and Pay off Debt Fast
If you want to pay off debt fast, first of all you have to adjust your attitude towards spending. Hundreds of thousands of Americans live above their means and if you have credit card debt, you are one of them as well.
Credit card companies are letting people spend money that they do not yet have not because they are trying to help. They want to suck you in deeper and deeper in debt, so that you become their slave for many years. This is one of the reasons why it is relatively easy to open a credit card. Do not let them fool you. Try to pay off your credit cards and close the accounts as soon as you can. Using debit cards will help you control your spending and help you pay off your debt faster.
Making a spending plan also helps in eliminating the debt. The more money you save, the more you will be able to put towards your debt. If you want to get rid off the debt quickly, stop going out to eat, stop buying stuff because it is on sale and try to develop frugal living habits. Spend money only if you absolutely have to. You surely need food, but do you really NEED a new sofa? You need to buy gas, so you can drive, but do you really NEED to go on vacation this year? New sofa and vacation will make you feel good for a short period of time, but they are not going to help you become debt free. If you are determined to pay off your debt, you have to learn how to sacrifice. If you don’t prioritize paying off your debt as your primary goal, you are not going to succeed.
Your next task should be to rid yourself of the worst debt myths.
- Debt is OK as long as the interest rate is low.
Wrong! Even a very low interest rate will dramatically increase the cost of your purchase.
- Paying the minimum payment is all you have to do.
If you are making only the minimum payments, it will take you decades and thousands of dollars to pay your debt off. Making the minimum payment is very expensive.
- I am already in debt, so what are a few small extra charges?
This mentality will only get you deeper in debt.
- I work so hard, so I deserve to buy a luxury car/install a swimming pool/go on vacation to Europe, etc. You surely do deserve all these things if you saved enough money so you can actually pay for them. If you can’t, maybe you don’t work that hard; or maybe you need to sacrifice some other things in order to get something expensive that you really want.
- If I can’t pay my debt off, I will just file for bankruptcy. Yes, you may file it, but bankruptcy should be used as a last resort, because it will have a lasting impact on your credit.
A solution to your debt problem does exist. You can pay your debt off fast if you avoid the debt myths, change your attitude and stop living beyond your means.
